DPSCD to celebrate student talent at Fox Theatre showcase

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is set to showcase student creativity and talent during its annual “An Evening of Fine Arts,” returning for its fifth year at the historic Fox Theatre at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6.

The tradition highlights the district’s arts education programs, bringing together student performers and visual artists from across Detroit. Although admission is free and open to the public, tickets are required for entry and are available in advance at participating schools, the DPSCD Office of Fine Arts and online.

“Each year’s performances outmatch the previous year’s performances, and I find myself smiling throughout the entire night and leaving the event not only with great pride but wishing everyone who doubted our students or the importance of DPSCD could be required to attend,” said Nikolai Vitti, DPSCD Superintendent, via press release.

This year’s event marks the culmination of a competitive audition process, with 760 middle and high school students selected to participate in 27 live performances. In addition, 26 student artists will have their original visual artwork displayed in the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby.

“For 57 years, this beloved tradition has showcased not only extraordinary artistic talent, but also the collective commitment of DPSCD educators, families, and community partners who believe deeply in arts education,” said LaTrice McClendon, President of the DPSCD Board of Education in an issued statement.

“When our students take the Fox Theatre stage and fill its grand spaces with their work, they remind us that the arts are essential to learning, self-expression, and the future of our city.”

Audiences can expect a diverse lineup of performances, including instrumental and vocal ensembles, dance routines and theatre excerpts. The event not only celebrates student achievement but also underscores the role of arts programs in fostering creativity, confidence and community connection, organizers say.
