Downtown Detroit’s Sugar Factory restaurant closes after nearly 4 years

A restaurant that made you feel like a kid in a candy store, literally, with fishbowl-size boozy drinks and an over-the-top menu that has savory and sweets, is no more.

The Sugar Factory American Brasserie, at 45 Monroe St. across from Campus Martius, quietly closed what appears to be weeks ago. Located in the space formerly occupied by a Hard Rock Cafe location, the Sugar Factory stood for nearly four years.

As early as May 8, photos revealed the space was empty with no TVs on the walls and not a single Skittle in sight.

“We can confirm Sugar Factory in Detroit closed on Monday, May 11,” the Sugar Factory said in an email statement to the Free Press. We’re grateful to our guests and team for their support.”

Sugar Factory’s highly anticipated opening came in late summer 2022. The restaurant came to downtown, billed as a fun, celebrity-friendly place and as one of the most “Instagrammable ” restaurants, with its bright atmosphere and floral and candy heart walls. On its menu were some over-the-top items, including an edible 24K gold-draped burger served with fries sprinkled with more edible gold, zany milkshakes and beef sliders served on multi-colored buns.

Its food menu includes brunch options, lunch and dinner entrees like burgers, pastas and salad, as well as a dessert menu.

Along with food and bar menus, the Sugar Factory, as its name implies, was a place loaded with candy and sweets.

Sugar Factory, according to its website, has locations across nine states.
