Detroit Techno 5K helps kick Movement Festival off on right foot

Harrison Diskin married his love of running with his passion for producing events and this weekend will oversee the second annual Detroit Techno 5K at Historic Fort Wayne.

The timed 3.1 mile race will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and will feature a DJ sets from Raedy Lex and Simio at the starting line and along the route, respectively, and will conclude with a finish line set from Jack Beats.

The event is an official partner of Movement, the three-day electronic music festival which runs Saturday-Monday at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit.

There is space for 600 runners, up from 400 last year. Participants can register at techno5k.com.

“When I fall in love with something, like I did with running, my mind instantly goes to how can I bring people together and make this community that is driven by experience and events,” says Diskin, an event producer who grew up in Farmington Hills.

Along with Zac Berlin, his best friend from elementary school, Diskin launched the race in 2025 and set it at Historic Fort Wayne, where he had a hand in producing 2013’s Oakaloosa Festival.

This year’s race represents a “responsible expansion” of the event, he says. It will feature several food trucks and a coffee truck, and Diskin sees it as a blueprint he can scale to other cities and events.

Diskin, who is also planning a fall version of the event, has been a runner since 2017. He says it’s an invigoratingly analog activity in an increasingly digital world.

“As I find myself so consumed with technology and always on my phone and constantly plugged in to emails and text messages, it’s refreshing to go out on an hour-long run where you’re totally in the zone and you can’t have the phone in front of your face,” he says. “You can’t be scrolling Instagram while you’re putting the miles in. There’s something about being present when you’re running that is so special.”

He sees the event as a way to get Movement weekend off on the right foot, quite literally, a way to ease into the long weekend in a productive manner.

“We want to build a community of runners that are into electronic music and events,” Diskin says, “and offer them something that’s based around wellness and fitness.”

In other words: Run now, dance later.
