Detroit Lions seeking second opinions on Marcus Davenport injury

The Detroit Lions are still gathering opinions on Marcus Davenport’s most recent injury and trying to determine his status for next week’s showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

Davenport injured his shoulder in the third quarter of the Lions’ home-opening 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears. He returned to play four snaps in the fourth quarter but had an ice pack on his shoulder after the game and was scheduled to undergo further testing Monday.

“We’re still getting things looked at with that, so we’ll see where that’s at,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said at his Monday news conference in Allen Park.

Davenport has battled injuries throughout his career and his absence would leave the Lions extra-thin at the defensive end position.

The Lions list just three true edge rushers on their 53-man roster — Davenport, Aidan Hutchinson and Al-Quadin Muhammad — though Tyrus Wheat, who was inactive against the Bears, and Pat O’Connor also can play the position.

Last year, Davenport made just two starts for the Lions and missed the final 14 games of the season with a torn triceps. In 2023, he played only four games for the Minnesota Vikings because of an ankle injury.

Davenport injured his shoulder making his first sack of the season Sunday, and the Lions added three more as a team.

Asked about Davenport’s availability against the Ravens, Campbell repeated, “I don’t know,” three times.

“It’s a good question,” he said. “I’m hoping it won’t be too bad, but until we get a couple of these second opinions back I won’t know for sure.”

Campbell also said he believes offensive guard Christian Mahogany will be “Ok” after he got rolled up on the Lions’ final extra point.

“I think he’ll be all right,” Campbell said. “We’ll see. He’s another one we’re checking out.”
