Interstate 94 is closed at Jackson Road in Ann Arbor after a semi-truck crashed and spilled a hazardous chemical on the roadway early Thursday morning, officials said.
Authorities said there is no risk to the public and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were called at about 12:10 a.m. to a location on the freeway’s westbound lanes for a report of a semi tractor-trailer crash, they said. The tractor-trailer was carrying a variety of hazardous materials, the fire department said.
Officials said the tractor breached the median wall during the crash, which sent concrete debris into the eastbound lanes of I-94 and caused several secondary crashes.
Investigators said they believe the truck’s driver may have fallen asleep before the crash.
They also said that a 55-gallon drum containing 38% nitric acid on the truck’s trailer was ruptured during the crash and its contents spilled onto the freeway’s shoulder. Crews used sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the acid, authorities said.
