Coast Guard training in St. Ignace preps for pollution response, turns Cut River green

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Northern Michigan Area Committee will hold an interagency training through Wednesday, Aug. 18, in St. Ignace to enhance pollution response capabilities, officials announced in a news release on Monday.

Residents and visitors in the U.P. near the Little Bear East Arena should expect an increased presence of first responders and emergency personnel.

“An equipment deployment drill is scheduled for Tuesday (Aug. 18), followed by an exposition event Wednesday (Aug. 19). Additionally, the public may observe pollution response equipment deployed along U.S. Route 2 and non-toxic dye visible in the Cut River,” a news release reads.

Tuesday’s exercise deployed approximately 2 gallons of neon green dye into the river that has since dissipated, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Lieutenant Maximillian Morise.

Multiple federal, state, tribal and local NMAC partners are participating in the training.
