Chippewa County Sheriff Michael Bitnar has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the year.
In an announcement shared to Facebook on July 24, Bitnar announced that his retirement would be effective on Jan. 2, 2027, more than 35 years after he started his career in Chippewa County.
He was first sworn in as sheriff in October 2016 after working in corrections, uniform division, drug team, detective sergeant and undersheriff.
“The people working for our office are what makes it so great. We have some of the most dedicated employees here and I will miss them all,” Bitnar wrote in the statement.
Bitnar was last elected as sheriff during the 2024 Presidential election. An appointing committee will select a candidate to serve out the rest of his term before the next sheriff election in 2028. Birnar has recommended Undersheriff Ryan Hering for the position.
