The spring season is underway. Despite the Michigan weather, several sports have begun.
Here is a look at the top performers from the first week of spring sports.
Evie Price, West Ottawa tennis
The Panthers No. 1 singles player defeated Holland Christian’s Camryn Nadig 6-0, 6-3 in the season opener between tennis powers.
Kassie Evenhouse-Stella Klooster, Holland Christian tennis
The Maroons No. 1 doubles duo defeated West Ottawa in a 6-4, 7-6 battle of the top two doubles teams in the area.
Neave Rewa, Saugatuck soccer
The senior forward scored her first goal of the season just 27 seconds into the opener against Bloomindgale. She finished with a hat trick in an 8-0 victory for the Trailblazers.
Trinh Kleikamp, Zeeland East tennis
The Chix No. 1 singles player defeated Hamilton’s Allison Lezman in an abridged 4-0, 4-2 win in the season-opening tournament.
Julia Brown, Hamilton softball
Had four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs in a season-opening 7-1 win over Bridgman on Tuesday, March 24. She also had a hit and a run scored in the 16-1 three-inning win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Lily Achterhof, Fennville softball
The Blackhawks pitcher earned the win in the circle in a 15-3 win over Kalamazoo Hackett on Wednesday, March 25. She struck out five and allowed only one earned run.
Owen Brown, Hamilton baseball
The Hawkeyes slugger hit a three-run home run and had seven RBIs in a 17-2 win over Saugatuck on Wednesday, March 25. He had a squeeze bunt that scored two and also walked with the bases loaded twice. On Thursday, Brown got the win in relief in a 7-4 victory over Zeeland East. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He struck out one and walked one.
