Cheboygan’s U.S. 23 bascule bridge will be lowered and reopened to traffic on Saturday, April 25, at 7 a.m. for the first time in over a week.
The Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, raised the bridge on April 13 as water levels at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex were rising. MDOT raised the bridge to protect it against potential damage and debris flowing down the Cheboygan River and keep vehicle occupants and pedestrians safe, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division on April 24.
“MDOT engineers will continue to monitor water levels and conditions at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex upstream from the dam,” according to the news release. “An operator from the Cheboygan County Road Commission will be on site, ready to open the bridge in an emergency if needed.”
During the closure, US-23 traffic was detoured south to the Lincoln Avenue Bridge, which is upstream from the dam complex, according to MSP.
The bridge in Cheboygan was one of many around the state closed this month as historic flooding took place.
