Cheboygan boys golf earns trophy, softball sweeps Division 4 power

ELLSWORTH – It was a trophy-winning day for the Cheboygan boys golf team, which earned a third-place finish at the Elk Rapids Invitational held at Antrim Dells Golf Course in Ellsworth on Wednesday, May 6.

The Chiefs (375) were lifted by the solid play of junior Jacob Pluszczynski, whose 83 was good enough for a third place individual finish. Carson Kiefer (95) finished in 13th, while Elliott Schryer (98) was 18th, David Chase (99) took 21st, and Alex Hudson (104) and Andrew Kiefer (104) tied for 27th.

“I’m really happy with how the boys battled the windy, cold conditions,” Cheboygan coach Earl Parsons said.

Led by individual medalist Connor Uy (78), Boyne City (337) placed first. Central Lake (369), which was paced by runner-up Benjamin Strange (82), earned second.

Cheboygan plays a nine-hole event at Boyne Mountain on Thursday, May 7.

Chiefs take two against No. 3 Hillman

HILLMAN – The Cheboygan softball team just continues to win.

Traveling to face Hillman in an intriguing non-conference doubleheader, the Chiefs remained red hot by sweeping the Tigers with 4-1 and 10-6 victories on Wednesday, May 6.

Cheboygan produced enough offense in game one against Hillman star pitcher Gretchen Weiland, as Nataleigh Blaisdell (RBI) and Lydia Kosanke both finished 3-for-3, while Presley Chamberlain (double, two runs) recorded two hits, and Aubrey Mastin added two hits and an RBI. Tessa Lake chipped in with a hit and an RBI. Jenna Dodder registered a hit.

Cheboygan pitcher Lydia Kosanke had another strong outing, striking out 12, allowing three hits and walking two across six innings.

Chamberlain delivered a massive performance in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, while Lake recorded two hits (double) and two RBIs. Cheboygan players recording a hit apiece were Bea Schulz (RBI), Mackenzie Stockman, Diem Schley and Kosanke. Blaisdell had two RBIs and Caleigh Easter added an RBI. Mastin scored twice.

Teagan Wheelock earned the pitching win, striking out two and allowing seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Kosanke tossed the last 2 2/3 innings, striking out two and scattering two hits.

“I’m very happy with the way we played,” Cheboygan coach Mike LaLonde said. “Diem Schley made some nice plays at shortstop, and Tessa Lake had a great backhanded play at second base. They both played well defensively. All in all, very pleased. The girls put the ball in play, and they hit the ball hard.”

Cheboygan came into the game as an honorable mention in the most recent Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association (MHSSCA) state rankings for Division 3. Hillman, which reached the state semifinals last season, was ranked No. 3 in Division 4.

Cheboygan (13-7, 7-1 Northern Shores Conference) hosts Boyne City on Monday, May 11.

Chiefs edged twice in tight doubleheader

CHEBOYGAN – So close, but just not enough.

The Cheboygan baseball team battled all evening, but it fell short in two doubleheader losses – each by an 8-7 score – to the Sault (Canada) Black Sox at home on Wednesday, May 6.

The Chiefs (2-16) rallied from an 8-4 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, but the Black Sox picked up the final out to seal the win.

Cheboygan’s hitting leaders included Josh Clark, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nolan Schley, who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Adam Woolery, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Brody McGovern, Ben Groya and Carter Hudson each recorded a hit and an RBI.

Michael Laway took the loss on the mound, striking out four, allowing four hits and walking four in four innings, while Groya struck out a batter in two innings of relief.

Schley doubled and had an RBI in game two, while Nolan Eustice and Clark added a hit and an RBI apiece. Groya registered a hit. Duncan Spies, Ben Hall, and Woolery each had an RBI.

“I loved the way the kids battled and gave themselves, a chance to win both games,” Cheboygan coach Kevin Baller said.

Spies pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, striking out three and scattering three hits. Schley was the losing pitcher.

Cheboygan hosts Boyne City in a Northern Shores Conference doubleheader on Monday, May 11.
