CBS views Lions as potential Brendan Sorsby NFL supplemental draft fit

After one of the most controversial college sports sagas in recent times, Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the 2026 NFL supplemental draft.

Sorsby’s decision to enter the NFL supplemental draft comes on the heels of a well-publicized fight against the NCAA to regain his eligibility with Texas Tech for the 2026 college football season.

Sorsby had been ruled ineligible by the NCAA after it discovered he had placed more than 9,000 bets, totaling at least $90,000, on professional and college sports over four years while enrolled at Indiana and Cincinnati, including at least 40 wagers involving Indiana football when he was a freshman with the Hoosiers in 2022.

Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA by a Texas judge on June 8 that appeared to pave the way for Sorsby to play college football in 2026. But, that was met with fierce backlash across the college football landscape and by the Big 12 Conference.

With Sorsby pivoting to the NFL supplemental draft, CBS took a look at eight NFL teams who may have interest in Sorsby, including the Detroit Lions:

Jared Goff turns 32-years-old during the upcoming season and his primary backups are 33-year-old Teddy Bridgewater and undrafted free agent Luke Altmyer. The team had previously used a third-round pick on Hendon Hooker in 2023, but Hooker had never been a threat to Goff’s claim as the starting quarterback and is now on his fourth team. Sorsby could be Goff, but three years later on the timeline. The Lions are likely to be too competitive to find themselves within striking distance of a top quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, so this represents an opportunity to address the position at a value rate.

Detroit did give Goff a four-year extension in May of 2024, but the dead cap hit drops below $40 million — a paltry sum in comparison to recent figures from Tua Tagovailoa and Russell Wilson —  after the 2027 season.

At some point down the road, the Lions will be looking for a Goff replacement. Unless things really spiral, moving on from Goff after the 2027 season still feels unlikely.

In his college career, Sorsby passed for 7,208 yards and 60 touchdowns against 18 interceptions.

Sorsby would have to be granted entry by the NFL in order to be eligible to be selected in the supplemental draft later this summer.

A league spokesperson declined to comment when reached by NFL.com on Monday night.
