Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold left practice after he appeared to hurt his right hamstring early in the team’s scrimmage Tuesday, July 29.
The second-year cover man was seen grabbing his upper leg after defending tight end Sam LaPorta on a throw downfield.
Up until then, Arnold had been one of the standouts in training camp, showing encouraging signs of development by guarding receivers tightly and creating pass breakups.
“You expected another level of confidence, of maturity and ownership, really, accountability,” head coach Dan Campbell said last week, responding to a question about Arnold. “That’s what you feel right now at this point.”
Arnold is the latest prominent defensive back to get hurt. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. suffered a chest injury on the first day of training camp and missed four practices before returning to the field this past Saturday. Fellow cornerback Amik Robertson, meanwhile, has been out of drills the past two days. He did not disclose his injury when stopped by reporters. And safety Kerby Joseph, who has been bothered by knee irritation, hasn’t practiced since Friday. Campbell said the Lions are hoping Joseph will be back this Saturday.
With Arnold out of action, backups Rock-Ya Sin and Dicaprio Bootle worked with the first team. Cornerback D.J. Reed, who had been limited in recent practices, played opposite of them and was a full participant.
