Softball’s stranglehold has been broken.
Luke Dulecki of New Boston Huron’s boys track and field team was crowned the winner of the Monroe County Region Athlete of the Week poll for April 13-19.
The first three winners of the spring season had been softball players.
Dulecki finished with the best total of the spring, drawing 12,671 votes.
He was followed by a pair of softball players – Sophia Steinman of Bedford (8,371) and Monroe’s Olivia McMahon (2,401).
You can now cast your vote for the April 20-26 winner.
Polling will continue through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29.
Here are this week’s candidates in alphabetical order:
Brooke Burke, New Boston Huron soccer: Posted three victories, including two shutouts. The only goal she allowed was on a penalty kick.
Sierra Daniels, Monroe softball: Drove in six runs, scored six times and collected five hits in a doubleheader sweep.
Owen DeLano, New Boston Huron baseball: Threw a no-hitter and sparked the offense with two hits and two stolen bases in a win over Grosse Ile.
Logan Doom, Erie Mason boys golf: Recorded an albatross during a Tri-County Conference jamboree, needing just two shots to find the cup on a par-5.
Reagan Higdon, Flat Rock girls track and field: Won the 100, 200 and 400 and ran a leg on the winning 800 relay in a win over Jefferson.
Julia Hughes, Ida girls track and field: Finished first in both hurdle races and ran on a winning relay during a victory over Dundee.
Iva Ravindra, Bedford girls track and field: Recorded a pair of season-best times in placing first and second in leading her team to the title in the Ypsilanti Lincoln Railsplitter Invitational.
Marcos Reyna, New Boston Huron boys track and field: Posted victories in the 400 meters and long jump and ran on two winning relays against Riverview.
Lincoln Murbach, Erie Mason boys track and field: Set a meet record of :40.85 to win the low hurdles at the Livonia Franklin Night Lights Meet.
Macy Ovall, Whiteford softball: Threw a no-hitter against Morenci. Earned eight-inning win over Ida.
Allen Roof, Summerfield baseball: Included a double and home run among his four hits in a win over Vandercook Lake.
Caden Schroyer, Whiteford baseball: Tossed a no-hitter and led the offense with three hits in a sweep of Morenci. Homered and earned a pitching win Saturday against Clinton.
Alex Tremonti, Dundee boys track and field: Won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and ran on two winning relays to spark a win over Ida.
AJ Varner, Bedford boys track and field: Won both hurdle races in leading his team to the title in the Ypsilanti Lincoln Railsplitter Invitational.
Reece Wieckowski III, Gibraltar Carlson boys track and field: Won the 100 and 200-yard dashes and ran on the winning 800 relay in the Battle of the Leagues meet.
