BRANCH COUNTY — Many federal, state, and local public offices will be closed Thursday, June 19, for Juneteenth.
Branch County is adding an unpaid furlough holiday on Friday, June 20, for a four-day weekend for its employees.
Emergency services work on both days for all government agencies.
The holiday marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed Black people that the Civil War was over and slavery had been ended in the U.S. The National Museum of African American History & Culture says it’s become known as America’s second Independence Day.
