Justin Steinman is ending his high school golf career as a state champion.
The DeWitt senior won on the second playoff hole to finish as the medalist at the Division 2 state golf finals at Grand Valley State’s The Meadows on Saturday, June 6.
Steinman had a round of 72 on Saturday to finish tied with East Grand Rapid’s JP Levan with a two-day score of 141 before clinching the title with his win in the playoff.
Steinman’s first-place finish helped DeWitt finish sixth in the team standings with a two-day total of 628. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood won the team title with a score of 602.
St. Johns finished 12th as a team with a score of 653. Senior Elijah Schultz shot a 154 for the weekend and placed 23rd individually.
DIVISION 1
Grand Ledge’s Christian Helzer concluded his high school career with a top-10 finish at the state finals held at the Katke Course at Ferris State.
Helzer finished in a four-way tie for seventh with a two-day score of 145. He had a second-round score of 70, which was the second-best of the day and trailed only Jack Whitmore of Detroit Catholic Central. Helzer finished three strokes behind champion Ben Vento of Rochester Adams, who won a playoff hole to earn medalist honors
Detroit Catholic Central finished as the team champion with its score of 590. The Shamrocks edged Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice by two strokes for the title.
DIVISION 4
Lansing Christian concluded its season by placing eighth at the state golf finals at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West. The Pilgrims had a nine-stroke improvement in their second round and had a score of 341 to finish with a two-day total of 691.
Charlevoix was the team champion after shooting a 645.
Ben Rottman finished 11th to lead Lansing Christian with his two-day score of 161.
DIVISION 3
Lansing Catholic closed its season by placing ninth at the finals at Bedford Valley, while Bath finished 12th. Lansing Catholic had a two-day score of 660 and Bath finished with a total of 679.
Junior Carter Tribell led Lansing Catholic and placed 26th with a score of 162 after shooting an 81 each day.
Bath junior Max McCallister was the area’s top finisher, placing18th with a two-day score of 159.
Grand Rapids West Catholic was the team champion with a score of 625, which was 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Traverse City St. Francis.
Ithaca’s Harper Merchant led the area’s individual qualifiers, taking 31st with a two-round total of 164.
