Barn deemed total loss following overnight blaze in Olive Township

More than nine local fire departments responded to a turkey barn blaze in Olive Township on Oct. 21.

The barn off 136th Ave. was destroyed and labeled a total loss. It was already fully engulfed when responders arrived, according to a social media post from Olive Township Fire Rescue.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Olive Township Fire Chief Brian Dewitt.

WOOD TV-8 reported the barn is owned by the family of Eric De Witt.

“There are six very large turkey coops … that are actually leased to another grower,” De Witt told WOOD. “We don’t believe there were any birds in there, so there were no birds harmed.”
