Aerial video shows progress on $175 million Lansing public safety complex

LANSING — The Lansing Police Department has shared a video on its Facebook page of the ongoing construction of the city’s new voter-approved $175 million public safety complex.

“Progress is being made on our new building!” the May 27 post said. “This state-of-the-art public safety building is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027. We’ll keep you updated as construction continues.”

A groundbreaking happened behind the city’s South Washington Office Complex, 2500 S. Washington Ave., in October 2023, with about 100 people in attendance.

The new public safety campus will include a jail for short-term prisoners, Lansing Police Department headquarters, fire station and the 54A District Court, replacing most recently the site of Lansing’s elections operations and a former National Guard building that was bulldozed to make way for the new public safety buildings.

A breakdown of the $175 million proposal includes estimates of LPD’s new station costing around $73.3 million; a fire station replacement, $13.8 million; other fire station renovations and administrative costs, around $23.6 million; the District Court’s relocation, $33.1 million; contingency plans, $14.4 million; and predicted inflation, $16.6 million.

The public safety complex is a more far-reaching project than the city’s plans for a new $40 million city hall. Officials broke ground April 23 on the 65,000-square-foot, three-story building on Grand Avenue, across from the Capital Area Transportation Authority’s bus station, in a largely unused city parking lot.

Completion for the city hall building is scheduled for late 2026.
