A Walk in the Park: Lansing Township's Keegan Nature Park offers trails and Grand River access

A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.

Tucked along the south bank of the Grand River in the Ravenswood neighborhood, Thomas F. Keegan Park offers a serene slice of nature just minutes from the hustle of urban life.

Located on the 1800 block of Boynton Drive, east of Waverly Road, the 10-acre park is a hidden gem — rustic, wild and refreshingly untouched. The space, often simply called Keegan Park, offers street parking and its entrance is at the end of a cul-de-sac. Pull up curbside and step right into the greenery.

Wander the natural trails that wind through the thick forest of mature trees and among wildlife. Deer, squirrels, rabbits and smaller mammals and birds call this habitat home. Keep an eye on the riverbank for Great Blue Herons perched on rocks or branches, adding to the park’s wild charm.

Benches and picnic tables are available, perfect for a quiet lunch amid the beauty and tranquility. The park shines brightest in fall, when the foliage erupts in vibrant reds, yellows and oranges, painting a postcard-worthy scene along the Grand River.

The area for the park was donated to Lansing Township in 1967 by Thomas Keegan and his wife, who lived nearby. The land came with a clear stipulation to keep it a park, and keep it primarily natural. More than half a century later, that promise holds strong.

It’s a no-frills spot — no bathrooms here, so plan accordingly. Leashed dogs are welcome, making it ideal for a peaceful stroll with your four-legged friend. Raw and seemingly untouched, Keegan Park reminds us of the simple joy of an untamed walk in the woods.
