A Walk in the Park: Crandell Park is Eaton County's largest; offers lake access and trails

A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.

Crandell park is the largest and newest Eaton County park featuring a lake, hiking trails and plenty of views.

The 432-acre park, located at 3425 E. Clinton Trail in Charlotte, was the site of the Crandell Brothers Trucking sand and gravel mine. Eaton County purchased the park property from the Crandells and the park officially opened in 2017.After the mining operation stopped in 2016 the hole left was filled by spring and rain water creating what is now Eaton County’s largest lake, 160-acres to be exact.

Park patrons have plenty of water recreation options such as fishing, swimming and non-motorized boating.

There’s a nearly 3-mile long gravel trail that surrounds the entire lake. Those using the trail can see plenty of wildlife including birds, swans and deer just to name a few.

There’s also a diverse selection of plants, grasses wildflowers and trees to enjoy while using the park.

Along the trail there are lake access points, benches, picnic tables and fitness stations.

The park’s trails and lake are accessible a short walking distance right from a large parking lot off M-50 just west of Stewart Road. There are permanent bathrooms on site and leashed dogs are welcome.
