LANSING — Storms that swept across the state on the night of April 14 spawned at least six tornadoes in southern lower Michigan, including an EF-1 twister in Montcalm and Gratiot counties.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids said Wednesday evening it had confirmed three tornadoes in west Michigan. They include an EF-0 tornado in Allegan County and an EF-1 tornado in Allegan and Barry counties.
The tornado northwest of Lansing began about 10:51 p.m. near Fenwick in Montcalm County and traveled 19 miles before lifting near Perrinton in Gratiot County about 11:15 p.m., the weather service said.
That tornado apparently destroyed a barn that housed cows and damaged a house and other other buildings at Hull’s Dairy Farm in Fenwick.
The weather service had confirmed three tornadoes on the east side of the state, the Grand Rapids weather station said.
In a posting on X, the White Lake Township office said survey teams had confirmed two tornadoes in Saginaw County, including an EF-1 in Albee Twp and an EF-0 in Bridgeport. Additional surveys were still ongoing, it said.
An EF-1 tornado has sustained winds of up to 110 mph. An EF-0 tornado, the weakest category on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, has sustained winds of up to 85 mph.
