4 candidates to be interviewed for South Lyon city manager

SOUTH LYON – The city council has chosen four candidates to interview for the open city manager position, including the city’s former police chief Doug Baaki, who is currently serving as interim city manager and has worked for the city for more than three decades.

Other candidates are Susan Barkman, the deputy city manager for Royal Oak; Krystina Laslo, the former chief of staff in Dearborn Heights; and Eric Woody, manager of government and regulatory affairs for Comcast.

The city council hired Coldwater-based Walsh Municipal Services to conduct a search for its next city manager after long-time manager Paul Zelenak retired last fall.

“I feel really good about the candidates,” said Frank Walsh, CEO and founder of Walsh Municipal Services. “We had a robust response based on the South Lyon community. A lot of people want to get into South Lyon and serve South Lyon.”

There was high interest in the position, as 28 candidates applied, with the council selecting five for interviews based on education, experience and general fit for what they are looking for in a city manager. One candidate had to bow out due to a family medical situation, Walsh said.

He noted there was competition due to Chelsea and Howell both seeking city managers as well. Farmington Hills will also be joining the hunt after the abrupt resignation of its city manager.

The candidates will be interviewed beginning at 6 p.m., Jan. 28 at city hall, 335 S Warren St, South Lyon. The interviews are open to the public.
