A shooting during a funeral repast on the city’s northeast side late Friday, Feb. 27, left two people dead and two others injured, according to Detroit police.
The incident happened in the 19400 block of Sherwood Street in Detroit, where approximately 100 people were attending the repast, said Cpt. Marcus Thirlkill of the Detroit Police Homicide Division at a news conference after the Friday shooting.
One woman in her 20s and one man in his 30s are dead. The department did not release additional information about the victims as they worked to notify the families, Thirkill said.
The shooting appeared to happen in the parking lot where numerous individuals were outside. It’s unknown what the individuals were doing outside, Thirkill said.
The department does not have any information to release about the suspect, and the reason for the shooting is unknown, Thirkill said at the news conference.
Detroit Police Homicide Task Force, composed of Detroit police, the Michigan State Police, FBI and the ATF, is leading the investigation.
Police are asking anyone in the public who attended the event or who knows anything about the incident to contact the Detroit Police Homicide Division, 1-800-SPEAKUP or, to be completely anonymous, Detroit Rewards TV.
Thirkill said anyone who is getting into a conflict can contact Detroit police for assistance.
“We are asking people to resolve their conflicts in a peaceful manner,” Thirkill said. “If you feel like you’re getting into a conflict with someone, just leave. Separate yourself from that situation. Leave. Contact any Detroit police station, any Detroit police officer, and we will come to assist.”
A Detroit police spokesperson said no updates were available as of Saturday morning.
