18-year-old charged following shooting of girl, 15, at party in Lansing

LANSING — An 18-year-old Lansing man has been charged with four felony counts, including assault with intent to murder, in connection with the shooting of a 15-year-old girl July 19 at a party in southwest Lansing.

A magistrate denied bond for Josiah Cain during his July 22 arraignment in 54A District Court, court records indicate.

Besides the attempted murder charge, Cain is charged with firing a gun in or at a building, causing injury, and two counts of felony firearm possession.

The charges stemmed from one of four separate shootings in Lansing over the weekend. One man was killed and three people were wounded in those incidents.

Cain is accused of firing a weapon at a large party in the 2500 block of Risdale Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, July 19.

Police said a 15-year-old girl was injured when someone fired shots into the crowd. The girl was in critical but stable condition on July 21, Lansing Police Chief Rob Backus said. She was expected to survive, he added.

Backus said two people were denied entry to the party, leading to words being exchanged and a suspect pulling a firearm and shooting into the crowd. The 15-year-old girl was an innocent victim, he said.

A second suspect, a 20-year-man, was expected to face a weapons-related charge in connection with the incident, he said.

Deandre Campbell, 36, was shot and killed in a separate incident the following morning, Backus said.

Campbell was among a group of people gathered to memorialize someone who had died, he said. No one had been arrested as of July 21, but Backus characterized the investigation as “very, very active.”

No attorney was listed for Cain in online court records. A hearing to determine whether he should be ordered to stand trial on the charges was tentatively set for Aug. 8.

Meanwhile, Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane’s office said two juveniles have been charged in connection with the July 19 shooting of a 26-year-old man in the area of Pierce Road and South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Police characterized that incident as an attempted robbery.

A 16-year old boy has been charged in juvenile court with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, resisting and obstructing police and felony firearm possession through a process that blends elements of the adult and juvenile justice systems, officials said.

Also in that incident, a 17-year old is named in a juvenile-court petition for carrying a concealed weapon, Dewane’s office said.
