$120 million bond squeaks by in Novi; more results from Plymouth, Westland, Northville

NOVI — Voters turned out Tuesday to cast their ballots on candidates and proposals in the Aug. 5 primary. Here are the unofficial results that came in for Hometown Life communities, including Novi and Northville, which had bond proposals, and Plymouth and Westland, which narrowed city council candidates for the November election.

Novi

With 100% of precincts reporting, voters narrowly approved a $120 million public safety facilities bond proposal with 5,237 yes votes, or 55%, to 4,323 no votes, or 45%, according to unofficial election results.The city will levy 1 mill on taxpayers over the course of up to 25 years to fund a new combined police and fire station facility, two new stand-alone fire stations, and renovations and improvements to Fire Station No. 4.

The cost includes demolition of the existing police station at the civic center complex on 10 Mile Road; the demolition of fire stations 1, 2 and 3; and property acquisition, construction and furnishing costs for the facilities that will replace them.

Peggy and Norm Schmidt voted yes on the measure, unlike some of their friends who are similarly retired and on a fixed income.”We support police and fire,” Peggy said simply, while Norm expressed appreciation as well that the fire and police chief attended their HOA meeting to explain the importance of the bond. “The buildings in Novi are so old and you can’t (restore) them in a financially responsible way.”Betty Seach also voted yes.”I feel bad for the (police and firefighters) and the state of their facilities,” she said. “They need decent buildings.”

Westland

Eight Westland City Council candidates will advance to the November election for a shot at winning four full-term seats that are available, according to unofficial election results with 100% of precincts reporting. The highest vote-getters in Tuesday’s primary were Emily Bauman with 15%; Antoinette Martin with 14%; John Sullivan with 14%; Lekisha Maxwell with 13%; Michael Londeau with 9%; Jim Hart with 9%; DeLano Hornbuckle with 7%; and Josh Powell with 7%.

In November, the top three will get four-year terms while the fourth highest vote-getter will fill a 2-year term.Missing the cut were Linda Filizetti with 5%; Douglas Wishart with 3%; Timothy Wilhelm with 2%; and Bradley Gray with 2%. Many of the candidates were also seeking to fill two six-week terms before the full-term begins. The four highest vote-getters for the partial term from Tuesday who will appear on the November ballot for this role are: Antoinette Martin with 18%; John Sullivan, 17%; Lekisha Maxwell, 17%; and Michael Londeau, 13%.

Plymouth

Scott Silvers missed his chance of being on the November ballot for a spot on the Plymouth City Commission by just nine votes on Tuesday, according to unofficial election results with 100% of precincts reporting. Silvers came in last with 435 votes, or 7%. The top eight vote-getters who are advancing to November as they seek four available full-term seats are Jennifer Kehoe with 15%; Alanna Maguire with 14%; Nick Moroz with 14%; Joe Elliott with 13%; Karen Sisolak with 12%; Ron Picard with 10%; Kristin McHale-Johnson with 8%; and Jim Mulhern with 7%.The top three vote-getters in November will win four-year terms, while the fourth highest will win a 2-year term.

Northville

Northville Public Schools’ sinking fund millage renewal proposal appears to have passed, with 73% voting in favor of the measure in Wayne County (with 7/8 precincts reporting) and 66% voting favorably in Oakland County.
