One of three men charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old Detroit boy last year has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Deonate Cherry will be sentenced at 1 p.m. Aug. 21 before Wayne Circuit Judge Donald Knapp after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. A sentencing agreement is in place for him to receive 20 to 40 years in prison in connection with Rylee Love’s death.
Rylee was playing in his home in Detroit late last July when he was killed by a stray bullet fired from a car.
Cherry is one of three people who were charged in connection with Rylee’s death. Demontrel Wilson and Terrance Blue have also been charged and are set to go trial on July 27.
“Rylee Love was the ultimate innocent victim,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement after Cherry, Wilson and Blue were charged with murder. “The alleged actions of these defendants directly caused his senseless death. I have said many times that bullets have no eyes or sense of direction. The bullets in this case struck a child playing in his house and he will not see another day.”
Wilson and Blue are set to go trial one year to the date after the shooting happened at the intersection of Anglin Street and Stender Avenue.
Officers were flagged down by relatives of a home in the 17400 block of Anglin Street who told them a child had been shot. Rylee was found in a bedroom, where he’d been playing, with a wound to his head. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Cherry, Wilson and Blue are accused of hiring handguns multiple times from a vehicle into a group of people standing near the intersection of Anglin Street and Stender Avenue, according to Worthy’s office. Stray bullets entered a home, striking Rylee.
