1 killed, 1 hurt in shooting at possible after-prom party in Hazel Park

One person died and another was hurt during a shooting at a possible after-prom party at a Hazel Park house, which the police chief said was registered with the city as a short-term rental.

A 20-year-old Detroit man was pronounced dead at a local hospital and a 19-year-old Pontiac woman is being treated after the shooting about 1:15 a.m. Friday, May 29, in the 23000 block of Powell, Hazel Park police said in a release.

Police said it received multiple 911 calls of a shooting in the area of Powell and Orchard. Officers found a crowd of people fleeing a home on Powell. They found the man outside the home and the woman several houses south of the home, according to the release.

Police said preliminary information is that the house may have been hosting an after-prom party when a dispute occurred and people exchanged gunfire inside and outside of the home.

Police had no information about a suspect or suspect vehicle in the release. Police said detectives are getting search warrants as part of their investigation.

Police Chief William Hamel told the Free Press in an email that the property was registered with the city as a short-term rental.

In April, there were shootings at parties at short-term rentals in Harper Woods, where a 19-year-old Detroit man was killed, and in Birmingham in Oakland County, where property was damaged.

Conversations about moratoriums, regulations or zoning changes for short-term rentals have or are being held in communities across Michigan.
