The Marine City Commission meeting on Dec. 11 lasted just over 15-minutes as officials ran through a short agenda in what might be record time. Commissioner Trish May was absent from the recent meeting.
Here are some highlights:
January commission meetings changed
The Marine City Commission usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month but since the January 1 meeting falls on New Year’s Day, officials agreed to cancel it. Instead, they will be meeting on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. which meant the commission will only meet once in January.
Board appointments approved
Members of the commission were unanimous in their approval of two individuals to serve on a pair of boards in the city. In both instances these were reappointments.

Marine City Commissioner Rita Roehrig took the time to inform residents about the county’s “Be Ready” program.
Commissioner Jacob Bryson was reappointed to a term on the Dangerous Building Board of Appeals. He is the engineer/architect on the board for a term ending December 31, 2028.
In addition, the commission approved the reappointment of Kim Weil to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a term ending December 31, 2028.
First reading of drain ordinance
Members of the commission approved Ordinance 25-005 – St. Clair County Drain Rules 1st Reading. Commissioner Sean O’Brien just wanted to ask if the city has to get any further approvals from the county for the projects currently going on in the city streets, sewers and drains. “This doesn’t conflict with any of that? We don’t need any further approvals for what we’re doing?” O’Brien asked. City Manager Michael Reaves said anything the city does with county drains is always all approved by the county.
“Be Ready” program available

Marine City Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Hendrick took a few moments at the last commission meeting to thank residents for continuing to support the city’s Old Newsboys program.
Commissioner Rita Roehrig wanted to remind everyone that there is a “Be Ready St. Clair County,” program that allows residents to sign up for storm warnings, flood watches, small craft advisories, among other things. Roehrig said on the city website under “New Resident Resources” follow the click under “helpful links” and the information will be there along with
some other things to help people ‘get through life.’ The “Be Ready” link moves to several additional pages including a Facebook site and there it states that “Emergency preparedness and actions for Saint Clair County Michigan are provided. We identify various potential hazards and risks that may rise in the event of an emergency. Road closures, designated help areas, shelter locations and more. Be ready, be alert.”
Thanks for helping Old Newsboys
Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Hendrick took a few moments to thank everyone that helped make the Old Newsboys projects possible this past year. “I just want to thank all our volunteers it takes a lot to do it,” she said. The group has a parade, a craft show and then the newspaper sales and it takes a lot to put it all together, she said. “We just appreciate all the constant support we get from people in the community with your donations, we couldn’t make it all happen without the people because that’s what it’s all about,” Hendrick said. She added that the Old Newsboys will be helping some 235 kids with Christmas this year.
