Mackinac Bridge reopens to traffic after falling ice concerns: 'Worst we've ever seen'

The Mackinac Bridge reopened to traffic Monday evening after being closed due to falling ice, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

Prior to its reopening, the authority said in a post on X: “Consensus of our maintenance staff is that it’s the worst we’ve ever seen on the bridge,” in reference to the ice.

An update on the Mackinac Bridge Authority website at 5:37 p.m. read: “Currently there are no significant weather conditions to report to motorists planning to cross the Mackinac Bridge.”

According to a 2022 release from the Mackinac Bridge Authority, ice chunks, sheets and spears that fall hundreds of feet from the bridge’s towers and cables have damaged vehicles and have the potential to injure or kill vehicle occupants.

Travelers can follow status updates on the bridge’s Twitter page and the Mackinac Bridge Authority website.

Drivers can also sign up for text alerts from the RAVE Alert System by texting “MacBridge” to 67283.
