Pool director and activities coordinator also sought

As the $2.9 million dollar pool project progresses at the Lions Field in Algonac the city’s gearing up for a great summer. Now all that’s needed are a pair of pool employees to run things and some lifeguards to keep swimmers safe.

The old pool was removed and this is a sketch of what’s planned for the new facility at Lions Field.
Hoping to open the new facility by July 1, the project calls for a heated, walk-in pool, complete with a splash pad for kids and a deep end for older swimmers.

Algonac City Treasurer Alysia Bugg is in charge of taking applications for lifeguards, a pool director and activities coordinator. Hourly pay rates for each position includes $13.50 for lifeguards, $17 for the pool director and $15.50 for an activities coordinator.
She said they’d like to hire at least five lifeguards who would all work part-time at the new pool.
The city plans to pay for the certification of any applicants who are not currently certified. Bugg said CPR/AED training are included in the Red Cross certification for the lifeguards, who must be 15 years or older to take the course.
Blue Water Healthy Living caught up with Bugg via email to pose a few additional questions with more details about the job opportunities at the city pool.
Blue Water Healthy Living: What will the city provide for lifeguards – t-shirts – name tags – whistles?
Algonac City Treasurer Alysia Bugg: This is still in the discussion process. We don’t believe any of this was given before.
BWHL: The Pool Director position – what background – education – experience is required? Some of their duties?
Bugg: We are looking for someone who has high school diploma/GED, has overseen scheduling and has cashier experience. They will also need to pass the lifeguard certification. On top of being a lifeguard they will oversee the lifeguard staff and scheduling; concession stand and cash register.
BWHL: How about the activity’s coordinator – requirements? Example of an activity they might plan and be in charge of?
Bugg: This year we are not sure we foresee the need of an activity coordinator due to only being open for part of the season. In the future I would like them to have scheduling experience, cashier experience, lifeguard certification. The activities would be swim lessons, adult swim, lap swim, and night swim. All ideas will be open for discussion. On top of being a lifeguard they would be in charge of booking the pool hours for specific activities along with open swim.
BWHL: Do you have an idea of when these positions will need to be filled and a start date for the new employees?
Bugg: We are hoping to have the pool open by the first weekend in July.
BWHL: How can someone apply for these positions today?
Bugg: We have applications on our website, here at city hall or I can email them to anyone.
BWHL: Will the city pool be a place for local residents to host parties? Will the pool be closed to the public during those events?
Bugg: I don’t believe this was ever done before but we are open for ideas.
BWHL: Will the pool be open seven days a week and what will the operating hours be?
Bugg: We don’t have exact hours just yet. We are hoping to have full staff but if we cannot find help or they cannot pass certification we might not be able to be open full time. We are hoping to be open from 10am to 8pm Monday through Friday.
BWHL: What other amenities will the pool have – bath house – concession stand? Rental of pool toys, furniture, or towels?
Bugg: This year we are hoping to have concessions and furniture. Due to only being open two months we might not have all the amenities we want right away.
BWHL: What will the admission be for the pool?
Bugg: Due to not being open for a full season this year we are taking the fee schedule to the council in the next few weeks. We are asking that those ages 4 and under be free and ages 5 and up be $3 a visit. We will have further discussion on pool passes for future years.
