The Jacksonville Jaguars have wrapped up their second week of the preseason. The team fell to the Panthers as starters looked on from the sideline.
There’s one more week left in the preseason and one final week for end-of-roster players to attempt to make their case to not be cut. It’s the time of camp where a big splash won’t likely make a difference, it’s about the ripples they’ve made throughout the offseason and to this point.
The Jaguars will have two joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, meaning they’ll allow several players the opportunity to have the spotlight in the final preseason game as starters will likely rest again.
After the third preseason game, let’s take a look at another 53-man roster projection:
Jaguars potential 53-man roster ahead of Preseason Week 1
Notes:
Quarterback (2)
Projected on roster: Trevor Lawrence, Nick Mullens
Cuts: Joey Aguilar (R), Carter Bradley
Observations: No changes to the main roster, but I’d say Aguilar is winning the quarterback battle as of now. He’s had very limited reps in training camp, but has made the most of his game reps. I’d expect him and Bradley to each get a half next week against Tampa and the better player will get to keep their practice squad spot.
Running Back (4)
Projected on roster: Chris Rodriguez Jr., Bhayshul Tuten, LeQuint Allen, Ameer Abdullah
Cuts: DeeJay Dallas, J’Mari Taylor (R)
Observations: Abdullah has regained the upper hand in the battle for the fourth spot in the running back room. Allen is expected to miss the remainder of camp and the only reason he isn’t listed on IR is because he has been on the sidelines with a leg sleeve on as opposed to a brace. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was put on the IR list, though, which would be great news for Taylor.
Wide receiver (5)
Projected on roster: Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, Travis Hunter, Josh Cameron (R), CJ Williams (R)
Cuts: Brady Boyd (R), Chandler Brayboy, Tim Jones, Trebor Pena (R), Austin Trammell, Michael Wortham (R)
Observations: Still no changes at receiver. The top guys are locked and the trio of Trammell, Jones and Brayboy should have done enough to solidify their spot on practice squad. Is there room for one more pass catcher on p-squad?
Tight end (4)
Projected on roster: Brenton Strange, Nate Boerkircher (R), Tanner Koziol (R), Hunter Long
Cuts: Patrick Herbert, Ethan Conner (R), Quintin Morris
Observations: Hunter Long survives the cuts for another week. His dropped touchdown should put him off the island, honestly. Still, Morris is going to have to show something to surpass the veteran tight end and make the final roster.
Offensive line (10)
Projected on roster: Cole Van Lanen, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Anton Harrison, Walker Little, Emmanuel Pregnon (R), Jonah Monheim, Wyatt Milum, Daniel Faalele
Cuts: Jerome Carvin, Ricky Lee, Jimto Obidegwu, Sam Mustipher, Kilian Zierer, Geron Christian, Timothy McKay
Injured reserve: Chuma Edoga, Patrick Mekari, DiGiorgio (IR)/(R)
Observations: The Jaguars have up to eight IR spots with designation to return they can use on cut down day. There’s a world where multiple offensive linemen find themselves on that list on Aug. 30. Mekari had back surgery and Edoga missed several days of practice last week after exiting the game against the Saints. The good news is Van Lanen returned from PUP and has a runway to be the starting right tackle in Week 1.
Defensive line/Edge rusher (10)
Projected on roster: Josh Hines-Allen, DaVon Hamilton, Arik Armstead, Travon Walker, Ruke Orhorhoro, Matt Dickerson, Albert Regis (R), BJ Green II, Danny Striggow, Wesley Williams (R)
Cuts: Keivie Rose, Zach Durfee (R), T.J. Bollers (R), Jalen Hunt (R), Quindarius Dunnigan, Bryan Thomas Jr. (R)
Observations: A position group that’s been set since the start of camp. Durfee’s wings got clipped just as he was gaining steam, unfortunately. He and Bryan Thomas will make good additions to the practice squad where they are an injury away from being called into action.
Linebacker (5)
Projected on roster: Foye Oluokun, Ventrell Miller, Dennis Gardeck, Branson Combs, Yasir Abdullah
Cuts: Jahlani Tavai, Amari Burney, Jalen McLeod
Injured reserve: Jack Kiser (IR), Parker Hughes (R/IR)
Observations: The camp battle for a stating spot between Miller and Combs has spilled into the final week of the preseason. Tavai has impressed and could find himself on the 53 if Kiser heads to the injured reserve list. Second-year backer Jalen McLeod missed practice days last week. After being sidelined his entire rookie season, he needs all the reps he can get. He’s a camp casualty as Yasir Abdullah survives another season on the bubble.
Cornerback (5)
Projected on roster: Travis Hunter, Montaric Brown, Jourdan Lewis, Jarrian Jones, Jabbar Muhammad
Cuts: Christian Braswell, Preston Hodge (R), Devon Marshall (R), Corey Ballentine
Observations: No changes here. Braswell and Muhammad will have one more week to decide a victor. Hodge and Ballentine are likely to make the practice squad alongside whichever player doesn’t make the 53.
Safety (5)
Projected on roster: Eric Murray, Antonio Johnson, Caleb Ransaw, Rayuan Lane III, Jalen Huskey (R)
Cuts: Devin Neal Jr. (R), Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig, Trevian Thomas
Observations: Again, Murray and Johnson are starters on defense. Ransaw and Lane are special teams starters. Huskey had his best week of camp last week. Silmon-Craig has looked good in his second season with the team. He’ll likely stick around on the practice squad unless he gets claimed.
Special Teams (3)
Projected on roster: Logan Cooke, Cam Little, Ross Matiscik
Cuts: N/A
Observations: Despite Travis Hunter’s best attempts, Little has the best job security on the roster with Matiscik and Cooke.
