For the New York Jets, one of the clearest themes emerging this summer is a commitment to playing with controlled aggression.
Aaron Glenn and his coaching staff have consistently encouraged players to play with patience while simultaneously attacking the football, competing through the whistle, and embracing the physical nature of practice. At the same time, they’ve been equally deliberate about making sure that aggression never comes at the expense of discipline.
Playing under control… That’s an important balance to strike. Aggressive football wins games. Undisciplined football loses them. The Jets appear determined to make sure their players understand the difference before the regular season begins.
Late hits, personal fouls and post-play confrontations can erase otherwise dominant series in an instant. The Jets don’t appear interested in removing their players’ competitive edge. They’re trying to refine it.
That’s often one of the biggest challenges for a new coaching staff. Installing schemes is important, but establishing behavioral expectations can be just as valuable.
Developing habits won’t make many headlines during August. They could make a significant difference in September. If the Jets continue embracing that philosophy, they’ll enter the regular season with more than a new system. They’ll have an identity built around playing hard, playing fast and, just as importantly, playing under control.
