The San Francisco 49ers injury situation is already becoming untenable and they’re only six days into training camp.
Capping off a terrible day of injury news for their rookies, undrafted rookie defensive end Mikail Kamara was taken off the practice field on a cart per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner later confirmed it was a knee injury for the UDFA. Kamara was perhaps the most interesting player in the 49ers’ undrafted rookie class after racking up 22 tackles for loss and 12.0 sacks during his final two season with the Indiana University.
To make matters worse, neither rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling nor rookie defensive end Romello Height participated in Saturday’s session. The 49ers told reporters it’s hamstring tightness for Stribling. Height is dealing with an elbow problem.
A hamstring injury this early for Stribling would be a brutal blow for the second-round pick who was making big waves early in training camp. For now it’s only classified as tightness and the team will be extra cautious with its players early in camp. However, that Stribling has to navigate a potentially nagging issue before he even suits up for a preseason game isn’t a promising sign.
The other bit of tough news for the first-year players came via Wagoner, who observed that rookie third-round pick Kaelon Black was laboring through individual drills before sitting out the entire team portion of the practice.
Perhaps there’s general soreness for Black after the team’s first padded practice, but given the 49ers’ penchant for injury problems it’s impossible to handwave anything on that front.
We’ll keep a close eye on these first-year players and their statuses as camp rolls along.
