The Tigers on Wednesday announced the signings of two of their first three draft picks: First-round pick (No. 22 overall) Cameron Flukey, a right-handed pitcher from Coastal Carolina, and competitive balance round B pick (No. 69) Evan Dempsey, a right-handed pitcher from Florida Gulf Coast.
The terms of the signing weren’t immediately disclosed.
Flukey, 6-foot-6 with elite extension, was limited to 24 innings last season at Coastal Carolina because of a stress fracture in his rib. But his fastball can hit 97 mph with nearly a 19-inch vertical ride.
In his college career, Flukey went 10-7 with 34 starts across 44 appearances, posting a 4.08 ERA and 232 strikeouts in 180⅔ innings.
Dempsey was a two-way player at Florida Gulf Coast, but the Tigers drafted him as a pitcher, enticed by the 3,000-rpm spin rate he gets on his breaking ball.
Dempsey has a career ERA of 2.88 and 207 strikeouts over 162⅔ innings pitched over three seasons.
