Smoke from Canadian wildfires has moved into New York, creating hazy skies and worsening air quality conditions across much of the state.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an Air Quality Health Advisory as elevated levels of fine particulate pollution from wildfire smoke were expected across western, central and parts of eastern New York.
Fine particles known as PM2.5 can travel deep into the lungs and may worsen asthma, heart disease and other respiratory conditions. Health officials say children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions are among those most vulnerable.
The smoke has affected communities across New York, with residents reporting hazy skies and in some spots reduced visibility as wildfire pollution spread across the region.
