Castaway Play Café is temporarily closing for 'big changes'

Castaway Play Café will temporarily close Aug. 1 for a “complete reimagining” in Howell Township.

The indoor play space at 1800 N. Burkhart Road announced the closure via social media July 14, writing “big changes are coming.” During a phone call with The Daily, owner Dwayne Combs said he hopes to reopen in roughly two months.

Combs said the business — known for a jungle gym, cafe, arcade, laser tag and bounce houses — will remain a “family entertainment center.”

“We want to start working on the space Aug. 1,” he told The Daily. “It’s going to be different.”

Combs added he’s currently working on prospective partnerships to help run the space, and doesn’t plan on selling. A previous listing, he said, was made to “evaluate the best option.”

“Every laugh, birthday, playdate, and memory you’ve made here at Castaway Play has meant the world to us,” the social media post read. “Now it’s our turn to create something even more fun for your families.”

Employees who wish to remain, many of them seasonal, will keep their jobs, according to Combs. Customers who don’t plan to use gift cards before the closure can contact the business for refunds.

The location’s haunted attraction — Slay Nights — will continue as usual. The indoor, two-story haunt operates in the same building but separately from Castaway Play Café.
