William Joseph Gatchel II has been sentenced to a minimum of seven years and a maximum of 15 years related to criminal sexual conduct charges.
Gatchel, of Grimes, Iowa, was charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct second degree and one count of children accosting for immoral purposes.
Gatchel, 25, allegedly engaged in extensive online communication with a minor over a prolonged period. The interactions led to Gatchel traveling to Harbor Springs and transporting the minor out of Emmet County. Law enforcement was alerted when the minor child did not come to school.
Three hours after the initial report, Gatchel and the minor were located in Illinois. The minor was safely returned home
“This sentence sends a clear and unmistakable message: if you come into our community to exploit and harm our children, you will be found and held fully accountable. While this prison sentence ensures this individual can no longer harm the vulnerable, it also serves as a stark reminder of the digital dangers confronting our youth,” Emmet County Sheriff Matt Leirstein said in a statement. “We must remain vigilant in monitoring our children’s online interactions, as predators are actively looking for opportunities to groom them. I want to thank our dedicated deputies, detectives, and our local, state and federal partners whose rapid, seamless collaboration saved this child and brought about a swift resolution to this horrific case.”— Contact Cassidey Kavathas at ckavathas@usatodayco.com
