The Tigers were well-represented at the 2026 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Citizens Bank in Philadelphia.
Shortstop Kevin McGonigle, catcher Dillon Dingler, outfielder Riley Greene and Justin Verlander are American League All-Stars, with Greene, Dingler and McGonigle all playing in the game Tuesday night.
Here’s a look at how the Tigers fared in the All-Star Game, which the AL won, 4-0.
Riley Greene, OF
Greene was in the starting lineup for the American League (as an injury replacement), and batting eighth. He came to bat in the first inning and struck out swinging on an 88-mph change-up from National League starter Cristopher Sancez of the Phillies. He stranded two runners and ended the first inning, with the AL up, 3-0.
Greene then struck out swinging again leading off the fourth inning, against Jesus Lazardo of the Philadelphia Phillies in a second left-on-left battle for Greene. Greene now has five strikeouts in seven career at-bats in the All-Star Game. Greene was replaced in left field by Randy Arozarena of the Seattle Mariners in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Greene, 25, made the All-Star Game for a third straight year. He’s the first Tigers outfielder to make three straight All-Star Game since Al Kaline more than a half-century ago.
Dillon Dingler, C
Dingler was selected as a reserve, even though he had the credentials (offensively and defensively) to be the AL’s starting catcher. He replaced starting catcher Shea Langeliers of the Athletics in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In his first career at-bat in the All-Star Game, Dingler, 27, struck out swinging on a change-up from Washington Nationals lefty Foster Griffin in the top of the fifth inning.
He was replaced on defense in the bottom of the seventh inning by Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles.
Kevin McGonigle, SS
McGonigle also was selected to the All-Star Game as a reserve, at 21 years old, playing the game back home in Philadelphia. He replaced starting shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Leading off the sixth, McGonigle received a warm ovation from the crowd (which included at least 35 family members and friends), and grounded out to second base off Raisel Iglesias of the Atlanta Braves.
In the eighth, against Los Angeles Dodgers left Justin Wrobleski, McGonigle struck out on a nasty slider in the dirt.
Justin Verlander, SP
This was Verlander’s 10th and final All-Star Game, as he was a legend’s pick by commissioner Rob Manfred ahead of his retirement at season’s end. Verlander, who’s been on the injured list, wasn’t eligible to pitch for the AL.
Verlander, 43, did address the AL All-Stars before the game, and he was featured early and often in the Fox broadcast.
Tigers fan J.K. Simmons makes a cameo during MLB All-Star Game
Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, a proud Tigers fan, beautifully narrated an essay about the beauty of the game of baseball. The prepackaged video channeled “The Sandlot,” leading into a fifth-inning fireworks show as the late Ray Charles’ version of “America the Beautiful” played at Citizens Bank Park.
