Iowa has more than a dozen hyperscale data centers. See where.

With several new data center projects attracting opposition from neighbors, Iowans might be wondering where data centers already exist in the state.

There are hundreds of data centers, ranging from a few servers at a local business to hyperscale centers run by the world’s largest tech companies.

Here’s what we know.

Where are the hyperscale data centers in Iowa?

There are more than a dozen hyperscale data centers currently operating in Iowa or that have been approved, according to records from the Iowa Department of Economic Development.

Hyperscale data centers can occupy as much as 60,000 square feet, contain 5,000 servers, at a minimum, and use miles of equipment.

These include data centers operated by Apple in Waukee, Google in Council Bluffs, Meta in Altoona and Microsoft in West Des Moines.

How many total data centers are in Iowa?

Different sources track data centers differently, making it difficult to get a definitive number of data centers in Iowa. Some projects, like Meta’s Altoona campus, include multiple buildings that may be counted together or individually.

Data from the state included 27 data centers. Datacentermap.com tracks 116 data centers in Iowa.
