A teen was in custody after a 5-year-old boy was shot Tuesday night while riding his bike, police said.
“Thank god, he’s recovering,” said police Chief Todd Bettison in announcing Wednesday that police had a suspect in custody.
The youngster was shot in the arm as he rode his bike under his father’s supervision on the city’s west side about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Overall, juvenile crime is down in Detroit, Bettison told WDIV-TV (Channel 4). “This year, compared to last year, I have a lot fewer youths that has been victims of gun violence and the work continues,” he said.
The suspect is a minor. Community support “absolutely played” a part in the arrest, Bettison said. Tips helped identify who the suspect was.
“Thank you to the community. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Bettison said.
