If you smell smoke in the air Wednesday night, it could be coming from a control burn that fire crews are planning at the Gore Ranch southwest of Redding.
The prescribed burning on 43 acres is to reduce wildfire risk and improve rangeland conditions. It also provides a training opportunity to the firefighters, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said in a statement released on Tuesday, July 7.
The Shasta-Trinity Unit and Shasta County Fire Department will manage operations, which are scheduled from about 7 p.m. July 8 through the early morning hours on Thursday, July 9.
Cal Fire said the control burn will only happen when conditions are safe. The National Weather Service forecast shows the temperature high on July 8 could reach 99 degrees in the afternoon and the temperature low at 69 degrees at night. South wind is expected to become calm.
Cal Fire said smoke will be visible, and residents are asked to travel through the area with caution.
