Jessica Pegula's Wimbledon run ends in quarterfinal loss to Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff added another milestone to her growing tennis résumé Tuesday, rallying from a set down to defeat fellow American Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and advance to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career.

The quarterfinal featured the two highest remaining women’s seeds in the draw and lived up to expectations, with fourth-seeded Pegula taking the opening set before Gauff mounted another comeback on Centre Court.

After dropping the first set, Gauff relied on her speed, defense and baseline consistency to take control of the final two sets.

Already a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, Gauff had never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon before this year’s tournament. She will now compete in the semifinals at the All England Club for the first time.

Pegula remains a favorite in Western New York

Although her Wimbledon run ended in the quarterfinals, Pegula added another strong performance to a career that has made her one of Western New York’s most recognizable athletes.

Pegula is the daughter of Terry and Kim Pegula, owners of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

The Buffalo-born tennis star has become one of the nation’s top players while maintaining close ties to the region, where Bills and Sabres fans have followed her success on the international tennis stage.
