It’s been two years since linebacker Weston Port left his commitment to the UCLA Bruins to go on a multi-year mission trip to Europe. Port returned to the college football scene, committing to the Michigan Wolverines with all of his NCAA eligibility.
Before Port ever committed to UCLA, he was actually a Michigan commit, being recruited by former Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh before ultimately deciding to commit to Westwood. That stint with the Bruins never occurred, with Port heading to Spain instead. Port will return back from his mission in December, making him a 2027 recruit for Michigan.
Port was recruited by former UCLA defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe, who was a victim of last year’s treacherous 3-9 season. The Bruins, with a new coaching staff in place, didn’t hang on to Port. Port was originally a four-star recruit according to Rivals, but remains a three-star player after two seasons away from the sport.
Wolverines Wire writer Isaiah Hole wrote about how Port could fit with Michigan on Monday.
“The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker, of course, has been away from the game for a minute, but would bolster a room that has been depleted over the years by transfers and recruits flipping.” Hole wrote.
It’s not as if Chesney or any of the current UCLA coaching staff was expecting Port to come to Los Angeles, but him leaving for a Big Ten Conference opponent is far from ideal for the Bruins.
Even though he’s not as highly-ranked as he was a few years ago, Port still would have been a valuable addition to UCLA’s linebacking core. The San Juan Capistrano, CA native stands at 6’2” and is 225 lbs.
