IndyStar photojournalist Mykal McEldowney was awarded a Central Great Lakes Emmy award on June 27.
The award, in the “Crime/Justice – Short Form or Long Form” category, recognized McEldowney’s 18-minute documentary that aired in April 2025 as part of the investigative series “Lawless.”
In that series, McEldowney collaborated with IndyStar investigative reporter Kristine Phillips to examine how a group of rogue police officers in Elkhart brutalized the city’s Black residents for years.
The series has also been recognized by the National Association of Black Journalists, the Indiana chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists and the Scripps Howard Awards.
The Emmy was awarded through the Central Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which represents parts of Indiana, Ohio and Erie, Pennsylvania.
It marks McEldowney’s fourth Emmy award. He was previously recognized for “Fourth & Goal,” “First to Act” and “Slasher.”
McEldowney joined IndyStar in 2015, and has been on the front lines of telling stories throughout the community. In 2021, he was part of the team to be recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for an investigation that examined K-9 units and the damage inflicted by police dogs.
