COVINGTON, KY – A new Skyline Chili opened its doors in Covington just days after its longtime Skyline on Third Street closed for good.
The new restaurant is at the corner of Fifth and Philadelphia streets at a former Frisch’s Big Boy restaurant, about two blocks away from where Skyline operated for the past 55 years. It opened June 29.
“The Third Street restaurant was one of the oldest locations in Northern Kentucky and in the Skyline system, so it was important to us to keep serving our Covington guests and create a restaurant that better fits today’s needs and expectations,” Gary Holland, founder and CEO of One Holland Group, said in a news release.
Decor evokes Skyline’s 1950s roots
The new space offers its full menu via drive-thru and additional parking, something the Third Street restaurant didn’t have the space to accommodate.
Its decor is a throwback to the chain’s 1950s roots, including black and white checkered floors and turquoise seating.
The Third Street location closed on June 27 and all employees were transferred to the new restaurant, according to a news release.
Why did the restaurant move?
The Skyline on Third Street was slated to close on July 31, 2023, because it didn’t have space for a drive-thru window, the Enquirer previously reported.
Just before then, Skyline Chili franchise partner One Holland Restaurant Group announced it would take ownership and keep it open. The change bought the location additional time while the company pursued a long-term replacement site nearby.
One Holland Restaurant Group owns more than a dozen Skyline locations, along with other restaurant franchises like LaRosa’s and Dunkin’ Donuts.
