On a day where the Spartans learned that its roster was gaining a massive boost from a first round defenseman, Michigan State is also expected to receive an addition from another NHL draft pick. Cullen McCrate will be joining the MSU’s roster for 2026-27, according to Elite Prospects.
McCrate is a 6-foot-2, 205 pound right shot defenseman. He is from Adrian (MI), giving Michigan State an instate flare. After prepping with Little Caesars AAA, McCrate joined the USHL, spending time with the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Fargo Force. After two seasons and some change with the USHL, McCrate was selected with the No. 216 overall pick in the seventh round of the NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames.
McCrate will bring another highly skilled defensive mind to the Spartans blue line and will be a great asset to have in 2026-27.
