The Cleveland Browns are still in need of some help at the defensive end position after they moved Myles Garrett in one of the biggest trades in recent NFL history.
Truthfully, even when they had Garrett, the Browns were probably shopping in the defensive end market to help add some depth to the room. Now that he is gone, and even with Jared Verse, they are definitely in need of an additional player at that position.
One of those targets was former 10th overall pick from Ohio State, Joey Bosa. Bosa has had a very good NFL career, and after nine seasons in San Diego and Los Angeles for the Chargers, he played one season with the Bills last year and again finds himself as a free agent.
Except this time, it is looking like it is going to end up with a pair of hung-up cleats as opposed to a new team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on his podcast earlier this week that it is “more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his final down in the NFL.” There is always the opportunity that could come along where maybe his brother’s team, San Francisco, comes calling, or even better, a midyear contender needs a pass rusher, and they drop a line.
However, it does appear that the writing is on the wall, and Bosa has more than one foot out the door for his NFL career.
It was always a long shot for the Browns to make a move at Bosa because their situations don’t really match up. Bosa is at the point in his career where if he plays, he is going to go to a contending team, and unfortunately, that just simply isn’t in Cleveland this year.
Now, for the Browns, they must turn their attention elsewhere. Right now, that edge rusher room in made up of Verse, Alex Wright, Isaiah McGuire, Julian Okwara, and Logan Fano. This isn’t exactly the deepest pass rusher room in the league.
The Browns need to go after some of the younger free agent talent that is available. If they can look to acquire a guy that is affordable and will add good depth to that room, it will go a long way in developing depth.
Bosa was always a long shot as an option. It now seems that he is a no-shot to play again, definitely not for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns still need depth, but they will have to look elsewhere to get it.
