Training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what’s to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.
What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, what takes place during training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins these roles.
Next up is the running back position.
What Jaguars’ training camp competition is taking place at running back?
There are two things to watch for at running back — one is who takes the top spot as RB1 on the depth chart, and also, how playing time amongst this group shakes out. Competing for these snaps are Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez, and LeQuint Allen.
What did we learn during offseason programs?
Rodriguez was sidelined during OTAs and minicamp with a foot injury, leaving Tuten to shoulder a lot of the RB1 snaps, and from the sounds of it, Tuten took advantage of those reps. More opportunities for Allen in the passing game is something to watch for as well.
Predicting who wins this training camp competition
At the end of the day, someone will have to be RB1 on paper, and my early prediction is that Tuten will hold that title. That said, regardless of who wins this job, we should expect to see a steady rotation at running back with Tuten, Rodriguez, and Allen all seeing regular playing time each week.
Each back brings something different to the backfield, and we know from Coen’s time in Tampa Bay that he likes to rotate backs in and out. Ultimately, matchups and in-game situations could dictate what playing time looks like from one game to the next.
