Maverik still opening at Churn Creek Bottom near Redding?

A year after Shasta County approved a gas station and mini mart getting built on a portion of Churn Creek Bottom land once eyed for a regional shopping center, it appears those plans have been abandoned.

Maverik Inc. proposed a 30-pump fuel station, and 6,000-square-foot convenience store with a sit-down restaurant and coffee shop on freeway frontage property east of Interstate 5.

“It is my understanding that that Maverik will not be moving forward with the development of the fueling station and convenience store,” county Assistant Resource Management Director Lio Salazar wrote in an email to the Record Searchlight.

Maverik’s media team did not reply to an email seeking comment.

Maverik opened a similar gas station and convenience store on North Street in Anderson in 2023. The project proposed for Knighton Road was only 5 miles north of its Anderson location.

In 2012, the county approved a 740,000-square-foot shopping center in Churn Creek Bottom. But the Churn Creek Bottom Homeowners and Friends Association used the signature-gathering process to get a measure on the ballot to overturn the county’s approval, and voters soundly rejected the shopping center.

Salazar said a gas station and convenience store could still be developed where Maverik wanted to build, provided the development does not deviate dramatically from what Maverik proposed.

“At this time, I am not aware of any party having expressed interest in developing the fueling station and convenience market.
