The weight limit on Grosse Ile’s Swan Island Bridge has been lowered to 3 tons from as much as 40 tons, barring most commercial vehicles from crossing.
The new limit is roughly the weight of a full-size pickup truck or large SUV, officials said. Most delivery trucks, garbage trucks and moving trucks exceed that threshold and cannot legally cross under the restriction, according to a Facebook post from the Grosse Isle Police Department.
Previously, a sign posted near the bridge said it could hold trucks and trailers between 33 and 40 tons.
The Wayne County Department of Public Services put the weight restriction in place after a routine bridge inspection June 23.
“Wayne County is committed to restoring typical weights and traffic,” the department said in a release. “We are exploring options available to us and are in discussion with Grosse Ile Township.”
Grosse Ile Township officials held a meeting with residents Friday to discuss the bridge and said in a release they will be contacting affected residents about continued services and public safety.
“Please use caution when crossing the bridge and plan accordingly if you operate heavier vehicles,” the release said.
