The top Michigan-born draft prospect is off the board.
The Seattle Kraken selected Chesterfield native Chase Reid at No. 7 overall in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday, June 26 in Buffalo, New York. Reid, who most recently played for the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds (in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada), was considered a top-five prospect and the top-rated defenseman by many NHL experts heading into the draft.
Reid, 18, has committed to play for Michigan State for the upcoming season.
Measuring at 6 feet 2 and 185 pounds, Reid has played his last two seasons with the Greyhounds, recording 48 points in 45 games in the 2025-26 season. Reid also represented the United States at the Junior U-20 Championships, notching two goals and two assists in five games.
Reid is considered the top incoming defenseman for a Michigan State team looking to return to the Frozen Four for the first time since 2007. The Spartans won the Big Ten regular season title in the 2025-26 season, but fell one game short of the Frozen Four after an NCAA Tournament loss to eventual runners-up Wisconsin.
